Sustainable Legacy
Join us on an adventure to become sustainable for the next generation
In recent times we as a team in Park Hotel Kenmare, have been greatly moved by the youth of the world peacefully raising awareness of climate change. It has made us think and look at everything we do differently. Park Hotel Kenmare is committed to a path of initiatives to ensure we adopt the best practice for our environment, community and guests.
It is the children of today, our guests of the future, that will inherit a very different world to us. If, as is scientifically proven, global warming increases by 1.5% by 2030, the world will reach a point of no return. It is a given unless we as individuals act, this will happen.
Park Hotel Kenmare dates to 1897, it is our responsibility to mind it for future generations to enjoy.
What we are doing
Any staff member who walks or cycles to and from work for 30 consecutive working days will receive a Dinner Voucher for 2.
Any member of our team who buys an electric car can use the company car for long distance trips.
Our Kitchen Garden will be developed further to supply as much vegetables as possible to the hotel.
Our chef and kitchen team embrace the use of organic produce and natural ingredients.
We will endeavour to supply most of our food from within 30 miles.
All our pouring wines are from Europe thus reducing long haul freight.
All our milk, buttermilk and cream is bought in large recyclable 20L containers.
We support local business and enterprise wherever possible in terms of the goods and services we purchase.
We insist suppliers deliver with minimum plastic packaging.
If limbs need to be removed from trees they are processed in a chipper, so the bark can be used in areas of the garden to suppress weeds.
Coffee grounds are recycled, while the plunger coffee grounds are put to good use as fertiliser in the gardens.
A full programme of light bulb replacement is well underway throughout the property, with all incandescent and halogen bulbs being changed over to energy-efficient LED versions.
All spent cartridges from our printers are recycled via a local supplier, who is offering this service.
Timers have also been installed on sensor-operating lighting to reduce energy waste.
All old batteries are collected and recycled in a way that is safe for the environment.
We will supplement our water supply from onsite wells.
Single use plastic will be eradicated from the hotel by end of 2024.
We segregate all our refuse into 3 areas, recycling, compost and plastics. It is our goal to eliminate 90% of our plastic by 2024.
When new appliances are purchased, their energy efficiency rating is a very important element in the selection process. We will only replace any equipment with low energy alternatives.
Solar power options are currently being researched for future implementation as the best energy source over a variety of operational activities. By 2022 we will have installed air to water heat pumps.
We will eliminate chemicals in our garden. All fertilizers / sprays used will be environmentally save before they can be used.
We are creating a Wild Meadow to cultivate flowers to provide food sources for native birds and pollen for bees.
